Lions Post Strong Start to 2013-14 Season

The Lawrence Lions have begun their season in impressive style heading into the first of two city showdowns against their crosstown rival, Lawrence Free State’s Firebirds.  The two teams will face off at 7PM on December 20 in The Jungle at LHS.

So far, the Lions have posted a 3-1 record, with two of those games being played against ranked opponents.

The Lions opened their season on December 6, with a commanding 78-41 victory over the Junction City BlueJays.

Next up for the Lions was the challenge of the Blue Valley Shootout (December 12-14).  The Lions were tested right off the bat with a first-round game against the Grandview, MO, Bulldogs (ranked #4 in Missouri Class 4).  Taking command early, though, the Lions ended up with a victory that sent them to the semi-final game against the host team, the Blue Valley Tigers.  The Lions defeated the Tigers 69-61, and headed to the championship against the Scots of Topeka Highland Park (ranked #1 in Kansas 6A).

The championship game was a hard-fought affair on both sides, with both teams trading runs throughout the game.  However, Highland Park eventually prevailed, 60-56, as the Lions suffered a scoring drought late in the fourth quarter.

Friday night’s city showdown promises to be exciting.  Lawrence High is ranked #6 in Kansas 6A, while Free State is ranked #5.  Both teams are 3-1.  And, of course, it’s a rivalry that could arguably be called the best in the state.
